Gradationsfilter werden in der SW - Dunkelkammertechnik verwendet, um Kontraste in der Vergrößerung zu verstärken oder abzuschwächen, um in Folge eine optimale Ausarbeitung zu erreichen. An ihnen, aber beispielsweise auch an den unterschiedlichen Akteuren, die sich im fotografischen Feld bewegen, zeigt sich, dass Variabilität ein Aspekt ist, der dem Medium immanent ist. Als technisches Werkzeug werden die Filter zu einem Trägermaterial umfunktioniert, um jene Überlegungen zur Diversität des Mediums in Form eines Schriftbildes zu formulieren.
